As part of the UNDP GEF Kura II Project “Advancing Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) across the Kura river basin through implementation of the transboundary agreed actions and national plans”, Dr. Hubert Lohr and Nada Abdelwahab from SYDRO Consult completed the second mission of the Project in May 2019.
The project aims to implement the Strategic Action Program for the Kura River Basin, achieving a sustainable utilization of water resources, improving water quality, protecting the water ecosystems, and mitigating climate change impacts, in partnership with the governments of Georgia and Azerbaijan.
In March 2019 Dr. Hubert Lohr went on a field trip to the Stori River in Georgia and the Shamkirchay River in Azerbaijan. The second mission consisted of a 2-day hydrological modelling training session in Tbilisi, Georgia, followed by a 2-day training session in Baku, Azerbaijan. The goal of the training sessions was to teach Georgian and Azerbaijani trainees how to build hydrological models based on the example of the Stori River and the Shamkirchay River respectively. Two hydrological modelling softwares, namely TALSIM and PRMS, were introduced in the training sessions.
The trainees were very motivated and keen to learn more about hydrological modelling. This successful mission will, hence, be followed by another mission soon, where the trainees will get the chance to model a river basin from scratch.
