SYDRO consult GmbH has been awarded a contract under UNDP Kazakhstan to conduct post-flood analysis of 2024 flood in Kazakhstan.
This flood management project is part of Kazakhstan’s water management strategy that was developed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Government of Kazakhstan and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme.
In April 2024, part of Kazakhstan was hit by a devastating flood event that wreaked havoc in different parts of the country. It has become imminent to check the level of preparedness to deal with such a catastrophe.
The project focuses on two of the selected pilot sites that were struck by a heavy flood event in 2024.
Selected pilot sites:
- Petropavlysk
- Atbasar
The main activities are listed as follows:
- Flood analysis
- Collection of existing flood related data
- Post-flood analysis at two pilot sites
- Flood hazard and flood risk maps development including flood damage approach
- Reconstruction of the Flood 2024
- Flood management
- Situation report
- Early warning approaches linked with a flood response organization
- Post-flood analysis content and organization
- Documentation
The overall flood management plan and its components are summarized in the following figure:
A thorough comparison between the satellite-based datasets as well as HEC-RAS-based flood scenarios of different return periods have been carried out to gauge the existing flood risk situations and then observed water levels have been used to reconstruct the flood inundation at the pilot sites for the 2024 flood event. Review of ice-dynamics in discharge observations have been recommended for a more plausible discharge measurement during meltwater season.
